TOPIK news: London 20th of April/19th of October

A few days ago I e-mailed with the Korean Education Centre in London about this year’s TOPIK just to hear about the deadlines and modes of payment and such things since the 2012 information was still on the website.

Basically they answered my questions (very quickly, actually), and their website has been updated to reflect the 2013 information.

Here’s what they said:

Dear M,

The exam date of TOPIK 2013 is 20th April. The venue will be SOAS in London.
Usually TOPIK takes place in London annually, only in April. However, it will be taking twice a year in UK from 2013. (20th April / 19th October). The application is open from January to February.

You can apply for two levels in the same time.

The exam fee is 25 pounds. Only check is acceptable.

You can send your application between 1st February-15th February.

Please see our website.

Kind regards,

For those who are interested in sitting the TOPIK in London, you can find the application form and the information you need here.

And I need to speak to my bank about that check. Writing checks in a foreign currency is something I haven’t done before so I had hoped a bank transfer would do…

Hrmpf… and there I was thinking “hehe that’s a bargain”.
Well, on a positive note I always end up thinking “cheeeeap! Give me two!” when I’m in England so maybe it’s a good thing they don’t have the exam in my home country since they would probably charge double the price and it would be half the adventure 😉
I paid $250 for my GMAT back in the days. I think it’s a global price, but that’s just rude…

Hello ! I am applying for the October session but I’m currently in the same situation as you were (for the payment), so I’m wondering if they accepted your bank transfer ? Or did you manage to write a check in a foreign currency ?

I checked with my bank and it would cost me around £30 just to order the check because it was a single check in foreign currency, and it would take 1-2 weeks before I would actually get it (it might be different with your bank so I would recommend you ask them). If you can order the check that is the easiest option. If it is really expensive and complicated for you as it was for me, I would suggest that you write to the Korean Education Centre and explain the situation and ask for their advice. They were very helpful when I explained it would cost me more than £55 in exam fees and we managed to arrange an alternative to the check payment 🙂
Good luck at the exam! 🙂

Hello, I am also applying for October’s TOPIK, I already send the application and cheque (I really had to search for it and in my country there is only one bank that provides cheques… but finally managed to do it!).
Does anybody know when we will get the letters with our identification slip?
I am really worried now… maybe I wrote something wrong in the application or maybe there was a problem with cheque?… Did you already got the identification slip from London’s embassy?

I will not sit the TOPIK in October, but as far as I remember, it also took a little while before I got my identification slip for the April exam. If you will sit the exam in London, before you get your letter, Royal Mail has to decide to actually get the letter out to you – from experience with Royal Mail that can take a while! 😀
Don’t worry 🙂 I was also freaking out about writing something wrong on my application slip, but first they need to register you and your payment, give you an exam number, send the letter, and then various postal services need to do their thing. If you still haven’t heard from them 3 weeks before the exam, you can always write to them and ask if everything is alright. Then there should still be time to sort out any slips that went awol in the mail (I sent my application with registered mail, so I *knew* that had been delivered).
