Bernon? Oh right, Vernon…

I’m reading Harry Potter in Korean and kept coming across the word 버논. I tried looking it up, but no matter how I typed it and tried to reverse engineer a useful verb stem out of it, I failed to find it in my dictionary. It kept reoccuring so it began to annoy me. Eventually I asked for reinforcement from a friend over Kakaotalk. The answer: it’s his name.

Doh! Of course. Uncle Vernon! B versus V-confusion for the win.

Because the Korean alphabet does not have the sound “V” so they change it into the sound “B”. This mistake is very common. I see many Koreans pronouncing like that.

It took me five pages and some help before I made that connection although B/V is a common thing so I couldn’t help but thinking “oh no 볼쌍해요!” hahaha

By the way, your entry reminds me to continue reading the Korean version of Harry Potter. I love Harry Potter so much, so I try to learn Korean through Harry Potter long time ago, but then I’m busy with my thesis and forget about it.

I wonder how many people improve a foreign language by reading Harry Potter 😀 thesis writing does that to you. I remember by the time I handed in mine, I just wanted it to be over. I was so worn out. I hope the next one will be a bit smoother.
